Let's start with some basic facts.
What are Fibroids?
Fibroids are a benign (non-cancerous) growth of the muscle of the uterus (womb).
They can be small (pea sized) or large (the size of a basket ball) but most are
somewhere in between. There may be just one fibroid but more often multiple fibroids
exist. Fibroids are very common and are thought to affect about a quarter to a
third of all women.
Fibroid Signs and Symptoms
Many women have fibroids and have no symptoms at all. It all depends on where in the womb the fibroids are located and their size. The fibroids can be found inside the womb cavity (called sub-mucosal), in the wall of the womb (called intra-mural) and on the outer aspect of the womb (called sub-serosal). Symptoms caused by fibroids might include:
- Heavy periods
- Lower tummy pain
- Bladder problems
- Infertility
- Miscarriage
